WalkingStar — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-05-18
WalkingStar is an iOS application that connects to a KingSmith WalkingPad
treadmill over Bluetooth Low Energy and helps you control your walking session
and review your walking history.
We have written this policy in plain language because the answer is short:
we don't collect any of your data. WalkingStar runs entirely on your iPhone
and on your treadmill. There is no WalkingStar server, no account system, and
no analytics provider.
What WalkingStar reads or writes
| Data | Where it lives | Who can see it |
|---|---|---|
| Pairing identifier for your treadmill | iOS UserDefaults on your iPhone | Only you, on this device |
| Session history (start/end time, distance, steps, calories) | iOS SwiftData store on your iPhone | Only you, on this device |
| Cumulative miles for the virtual-route feature | iOS UserDefaults on your iPhone | Only you, on this device |
| Walking workouts (if you grant Apple Health permission) | Apple Health (HealthKit) | You, plus anyone you share your Health data with |
| Bluetooth radio events | iOS Bluetooth stack | Not stored by us |
WalkingStar never transmits any of the above to a server. We do not have a
server. We do not use analytics, crash reporting, advertising, or attribution
SDKs.
Apple Health
If you grant WalkingStar permission to write to Apple Health, the app will
save each completed walking session as an HKWorkout, with associated step,
distance and active-energy samples. You can revoke this permission any time in
Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → WalkingStar.
WalkingStar does not read any Apple Health data.
Bluetooth
WalkingStar uses Bluetooth to connect to your treadmill. iOS requires the
"Bluetooth Always" usage description for background BLE; this is so that the
app can keep your session running while the phone is in your pocket. You can
revoke this permission any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth.
Children
WalkingStar is rated 4+ and is suitable for use by children, but it does not
direct content at children and does not collect personal information from
anyone, regardless of age.
Third parties
WalkingStar is an independent third-party controller for KingSmith WalkingPad
treadmills. WalkingStar is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by
KingSmith Co., Ltd. "WalkingPad" is a trademark of KingSmith Co., Ltd.
Open-source heritage
WalkingStar is a Swift/SwiftUI port of the open-source WalkingPad web
controller at https://github.com/CodeJawn/walkingpad. The BLE protocol layer,
the auto-pause and resume behaviour, and the cumulative session-stat tracking
are derived from that original Python project, which is licensed under the
GNU General Public License v3.0. As a derivative work, WalkingStar inherits
those GPL terms. You may request the corresponding source code by contacting
us at the email address below.
Changes to this policy
If we ever change what data the app touches, we will update this document and
the "Last updated" date above before that change ships in a release. The
current policy is whatever appears in the app's listing on the App Store.
